چکیده

In traditional possible-worlds semantics the meaning, or intension, of an atomic empirical sentence is given as a proposition, whereby a proposition is modelled as a mapping from possible worlds to truth-values. Call such propositions ‘PWS (ie possible-worlds semantic) propositions.’ This notion of proposition, however, has been rightly found to be too coarse to handle propositional and notional attitude as well as mathematical-logical contexts, since the principle of individuation of such propositions is no finer than logical equivalence. Consequently, a section of contemporary philosophy of language is characterized by a quest for hyperintensions. Hyperintensions, intuitively, are modes of presentation of intensions and extensions (and other hyperintensions). The need for finer degrees of propositional granularity has been accommodated by various notions of structured proposition containing objects such as individuals as constituents. Joseph Almog, among the founding fathers of so-called two-stage theory, gives the logical nature of what he considers structured propositions as ordered n-tuples. His position, characterizing itself as ‘broadly Russellian’ and anti-Fregean, sees itself as a reaction against both Fregean reliance on individual concepts to the exclusion of individuals per se and Kripke’s blurring the distinction between proper names and rigidified definite descriptions (such as ‘the actual F’).

William of Sherwood, Singular Propositions and the Hexagon of Opposition

In Aristotelian logic, the predominant view has always been that there are only two kinds of quantities: universal and particular. For this reason, philosophers have struggled with singular propositions (e.g., “Socrates is running”). One modern approach to this problem, as first proposed in 1955 by Tadeusz Czeżowski, is to extend the traditional Square of Opposition to a Hexagon of Opposition. ...

Frege and Object Dependent Propositions

The traditional interpretation of Frege has him endorsing propositions that are not object dependent, i.e., propositions that can exist even though the proper names that occur in the sentences that express them do not refer. But John McDowell and Gareth Evans have challenged this with an influential interpretation of Frege. McDowell first introduced a Fregean reading that included object depend...

And key informants of such businesses underw...

Singular Perturbation Theory in Output Feedback Control of Pure-Feedback Systems

This paper studies output feedback control of pure-feedback systems with immeasurable states and completely non-affine property. Since availability of all the states is usually impossible in the actual process, we assume that just the system output is measurable and the system states are not available. First, to estimate the immeasurable states a state observer is designed. Relatively fewer res...
